Builder floors, rooftops full of tanks

South City 1 and 2 and Sushant Lok are largely plotted colonies. Many plots have been rebuilt as builder floors, while others are still independent houses. In a typical builder floor, each floor has its own rooftop tank and all of them are fed from one shared underground sump. Walk onto one of these roofs and you may find three or four plastic tanks side by side, each with its own owner and its own cleaning history.

The sump is often under the stilt parking or the driveway, with a manhole that a car sometimes parks on. It is easy to forget about, which is exactly why it fills with sludge. Independent houses here usually have the same pieces on a smaller scale: one or two rooftop tanks and a sump of their own.

Why tanks here get dirty

Fine silt in supply water settles in the sump first and then in each rooftop tank. Rooftop tanks bake in the summer sun, so algae grows on the walls and under the lid. Where a building tops up with tanker or borewell water, sediment tends to build up faster. And when one floor cleans its tank but the shared sump is left alone, that tank picks up sludge again from below within weeks.

Getting a builder floor ready for cleaning

1. Agree among the floors which tanks to clean. Cleaning the sump and all rooftop tanks together gives the best result.
