Older homes that grew floor by floor
Old Gurgaon has some of the city's oldest neighbourhoods: dense lanes, independent houses that have grown a floor at a time, and buildings with shops below and homes above. Towards the MG Road side the mix shifts, with apartment complexes alongside older colonies.
In the older houses, tanks have usually been added as the family and the building grew. You might find two or three rooftop tanks of different ages on one roof, a sump tucked under the front steps or a courtyard, and a roof reached only by a narrow staircase. In apartments, water is stored in shared sumps and overhead tanks that the society or building management looks after.
Why tanks here get dirty

Our sump is under the front steps and hasn't been cleaned in years. Is that a problem?
No. We clean it from the manhole with a sludge pump and jet lance, so nobody goes down. Older sumps often hold more sludge, which is exactly why they need it.
