How often should you clean a water tank in Gurugram?

The short answer is every 6 months: once before summer and once after the monsoon. Here is why that rhythm suits Gurugram, and when your tank may need attention sooner.

The 6-month rule, and why it fits Gurugram

Most homes in Gurugram store water twice: an underground concrete sump that receives municipal or tanker supply, and a plastic tank on the roof that feeds the taps. Both slowly collect fine silt that settles on the floor as a soft layer of mud. Leave it long enough and it starts to lift every time the tank refills, which is when you notice cloudy water in a bucket or grit in a tap filter.

Cleaning every 6 months keeps that layer thin. It also lines up neatly with the two seasons that are hardest on stored water here:

  • Before summer (March to April): rooftop tanks sit in direct sun through May and June. Warm water and light let algae spread over the walls and under the lid. Starting the season with a clean tank makes a big difference.
  • After the monsoon (September to October): supply water is often muddier during the rains, so the sump and the rooftop tank both pick up a thicker layer of sludge.

If you only remember one thing, book a cleaning around Holi and again around Diwali.

When to clean sooner than 6 months

Some homes need a shorter gap. Consider cleaning every 3 to 4 months if any of these apply to you:

  • You rely heavily on tanker water, which can vary a lot in quality from load to load.
  • Your tank lid is cracked, loose or missing, so dust, leaves, insects or birds can get in.
  • The underground sump has a manhole cover that does not seal well, or you have seen seepage near it.
  • Someone at home has a weak immune system, or you have a small baby, and you want to be extra careful.
  • You have recently had construction or renovation work nearby, which puts a lot of dust in the air.

Also clean straight away if you notice a smell, a change in colour, slime on the walls or a sudden drop in pressure. Our guide on signs your water tank needs cleaning goes through these in detail.

Clean the sump and rooftop tank together

A common mistake is cleaning only the rooftop tank because it is easy to reach. The sump is upstream: whatever sludge sits in it is pumped up to the roof the next time the motor runs. Within a few weeks the rooftop tank can look as if it was never cleaned. Doing both on the same visit is the simplest way to get a result that lasts. You can read more about how we handle sumps on the underground tank cleaning page.

Does an RO or filter mean I can skip cleaning?

No. An RO or a tap filter treats the water at one point, usually the kitchen. The bathrooms, the washing machine and the shower all draw straight from the rooftop tank. A clean tank also means the RO pre-filters and sediment cartridges clog less often.

Planning cleaning for a society or several tanks

For apartment societies and RWAs, the 6-month cycle is easiest to manage as a fixed schedule: one round in spring and one after the rains, with residents told in advance when water will be off. Societies with 5 or more tanks get bulk rates. See the society tank cleaning page for how a multi-tank visit is planned.

Each tank usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes, so a home with one sump and one rooftop tank is normally done in a single morning.
