Water tank cleaning before summer and after the monsoon: a Gurugram checklist
Gurugram's hot summers and muddy monsoons are tough on stored water. This checklist covers what to do in each season so your tanks stay clean all year.

Why seasons matter for tanks in Gurugram
Stored water changes with the weather. From April to June, rooftop tanks bake in the sun, and warm water with a bit of light is exactly what algae likes. From July to September, supply water is often cloudier, and the extra silt settles into the sump and the rooftop tank. That is why the usual advice here is two cleanings a year, timed around these seasons. Our guide on how often to clean a water tank explains the reasoning in more detail.
Before summer: March to April checklist
The aim before summer is to start the hot months with a clean tank and as little light getting in as possible.
- Book a full clean of the rooftop tank and the sump before the heat peaks. Slots fill up once temperatures climb.
- Check the lid. A cracked or warped lid lets in light, dust and insects. Replace it if it does not sit tight.
- Look for light leaks. Thin or faded tanks can let sunlight through. If yours glows when you shine a torch on the outside, algae is more likely to grow.
- Check overflow and vent pipes have a mesh cover so insects and birds cannot get in.
- Plan for water storage. Summer is when water shortages and tanker use go up. A clean sump means tanker water is not mixing with old sludge.
- Inspect the motor and foot valve while the tank is empty, since a pump failure in June is no fun.
During summer: simple habits
- Keep the lid closed and locked; it often gets left open after someone checks the level.
- Use water steadily rather than letting the rooftop tank sit full and still for days while you travel. If you will be away, consider draining it partly before leaving.
- Look inside once a month with a torch. Early green streaks near the waterline are a sign to clean sooner.
After the monsoon: September to October checklist
After the rains, the goal is to clear out the extra mud and check for anything the rain may have let in.
- Clean the sump first, then the rooftop tank, ideally on the same visit. The sump catches the heaviest monsoon silt.
- Check the sump manhole and surroundings for cracks, gaps or signs that rainwater or surface runoff could seep in. Raise the edge or fix the seal if needed.
- Check for dampness on the walls around the sump and on the roof near the tank base.
- Clean the tap aerators and RO pre-filter after the tanks are done, since they will have caught monsoon grit.
- Do a quick glass test a day after refilling. If the water is still cloudy, let us know.
If water looked muddy for weeks during the rains, do not wait for the planned date. Cleaning soon after the monsoon ends is better than leaving a thick layer of sludge until spring.
Planning seasonal cleaning for societies
For apartment societies and RWAs, putting both rounds on the calendar early makes life easier for everyone. Residents can be told the dates in advance, and the crew can move tank by tank with minimal disruption. Societies with 5 or more tanks get bulk rates; see the society tank cleaning page. For individual homes, the tank cleaning price page explains how quotes work.

Questions
Why does my rooftop tank get algae in summer?
Warm water and light are what algae needs. Rooftop tanks in direct sun, especially with loose lids or thin walls, can grow algae quickly in May and June.
Should I clean the tank after the monsoon even if it was cleaned in spring?
Yes. Supply water is often muddier during the rains, so a fresh layer of sludge builds up in the sump and rooftop tank.
Which should be cleaned first, the sump or the rooftop tank?
The sump, then the rooftop tank, ideally on the same visit, so sludge from the sump is not pumped up into a freshly cleaned rooftop tank.
