Underground sump cleaning: why going inside is dangerous, and the safer way

An underground water tank looks harmless with the lid open. It is actually a confined space, and entering one is the riskiest part of tank cleaning. Here is why, and what to do instead.

What makes a sump a confined space

Most independent houses and builder floors in Gurugram have an underground concrete sump with a small manhole on top. It is deep, narrow at the opening, poorly ventilated, and not designed for anyone to work inside. That combination is what safety professionals call a confined space.

The problem is the air. A closed tank that has held water and sludge for months does not refresh its air the way a room does. Opening the lid for a few minutes does not fix that.

The hidden dangers inside an underground tank

  • Low oxygen. Rotting sludge and some chemical reactions can use up oxygen in the air near the floor of the tank. Low oxygen can cause dizziness and confusion quickly, and a person may not realise anything is wrong before they collapse.
  • Harmful gases. Decomposing organic matter can release gases that are dangerous to breathe. Some have no smell at all, and some dull your sense of smell after a short exposure, so "it smells fine" is not a safety check.
  • Fumes from cleaning products. Using strong chemicals in a closed space can create fumes that build up with nowhere to go. Mixing products can make this much worse.
  • Slips and falls. Wet, slimy concrete steps or a ladder in a dark, narrow space are easy to fall from, and getting an injured person out is very hard.
  • Electrical risk. Pumps, extension cords and wet floors are a dangerous mix.

There are news reports from across India every year of workers, and sometimes the family members or neighbours who went in to help them, collapsing inside tanks and pits. The rescuers are often affected because they enter the same air without protection.

What to do instead

Never enter, and never send someone in

Do not go down into a sump yourself, and do not hire a casual labourer to go down with a bucket. It may be the traditional way, but it puts a person at serious risk for a job that can be done from outside.

Check from the manhole only

You can shine a torch in from the opening to see the sludge level or the condition of the walls. Do not lean your head and shoulders into the opening.

Choose no-entry cleaning

No-entry cleaning reaches every part of the sump from the manhole:

  1. Before photos are taken from the opening.
  2. Remaining water is pumped out, or moved to another tank if you want to keep it.
  3. A sludge suction pump with a long hose lifts out the mud and silt from the floor.
  4. A high-pressure jet lance washes the walls, floor and the underside of the cover.
  5. A food-safe disinfectant is applied, then the sump is flushed with clean water.
  6. Rinse water is removed, and after photos are sent to you on WhatsApp.

Nobody goes inside at any stage. A typical sump takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The full method is on the underground tank cleaning page.

If someone collapses inside a tank

Do not climb in after them. Call emergency services (112) straight away, keep everyone else out, and keep the lid open. Untrained rescue attempts in confined spaces often lead to more people being hurt.

This guide is general safety information, not professional training for confined space work.

Keep the sump and rooftop tank clean together

A dirty sump keeps refilling the rooftop tank with silt, so it is worth cleaning both on the same visit. Our DIY vs professional guide covers what you can safely do yourself on the roof, and what to leave to a no-entry crew.

Questions

Why is it dangerous to enter an underground water tank?

It is a confined space where the air can be low on oxygen or hold harmful gases, often with no warning smell. People can collapse quickly.

Can an underground sump be cleaned without going inside?

Yes. No-entry cleaning uses long suction hoses and a high-pressure jet lance through the manhole, so nobody has to go down.

What should I do if someone collapses inside a sump?

Do not go in after them. Call 112 immediately, keep others out and keep the lid open until trained help arrives.
